Welcome to my website that is all about research techniques. Within this website you will find out all about the different types of research techniques used regarding the creation of 3 types of products for a new Single that an up and coming artist will be releasing in the near future. The purpose of this research is to help to find out as much information as possible about the three accompanying products for a new album which are a digipak, a music magazine album and a music video.

Primary and Secondary Research

Audience, Market and Production Research

The purpose of this website is to find out what the best possible methods of research are when looking at different media products. I am doing this so that any research completed using these methods to come up with a product, helps in best representing the artist and appealing to the target audience.

Primary research is research that someone goes about doing themselves. It involves actually going out and collecting relevant information regarding proving an argument or helping when coming up with an idea for a new product. Primary research is collected through interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, surveys or physical observations. The purpose of primary research would be to have solid and reliable information that has been collected and can be verified by you as you were the person who was there to witness the information being collected.

Secondary research is when you collect information based upon research that other people have done. You will come to a conclusion based upon readily available information and it means you don't have to physically get the information yourself. Secondary research can be collected from different sources such as financial information, company reports, letters, reference materials, internet sources, government publications and newspapers. The purpose of secondary research is to broaden the level and depth of information you have in order to get an outside opinion and aid in helping you back up an argument. Another purpose of secondary research is also the fact that it is a faster method of collecting information since the research has already been done by someone else and can be found online in many cases

Audience research studies the characteristics of a specific target audience for a certain product. It looks at things like demographics, listening/viewing/reading habits, programme preferences and audience size. The purpose of audience research helps researchers to come a conclusion about a specific audience of a specific product. This then helps to know what an audience will particularly like when it comes to a new product.

Market research is looking at information that can help to discover trends in consumer activities and needs. It involves looking at buyer behaviour and the popularity of brands. It can also be collected through surveys, interviews, focus groups and internet research. Market research is important because it looks at consumer trends so therefore it essentially helps the producers of a product know the profitability of the things they are creating. Market research is useful in helping to gain opinions of specific products and finding out buyer habits which can be used to the advantage of marketing a product

Production research is done by looking at the production process of a product in order to find the specific characteristics that will satisfy a specific need. This research is also done to look at the best way or producing something. This information can be collected by looking at past examples such as production budgets. The purpose of production research helps in the production stages of a products life. By looking at production research it can help the producers of a product to know if something is viable and which feature of a product is the most important part that the consumer will take note of and like the best.

Quantitative and Qualitative Research

Quantitative research is a type of research that uses numerical data when representing a piece of information. It uses statistics such as percentages and figures to examine relationships or trends about certain topics or brands. Examples include viewing figures, box office figures, website scores, website traffic and sales. The purpose of quantitative research is to gain a level of understanding through statistics which will help support an argument or something you might be trying to prove. For example when showing which is the best magazine to put an advert in it would be helpful to know which are the most popular ones for a target audience to prove which are the best ones to put the advert in.

Qualitative research uncovers trends through opinions, thoughts, behaviour and attitudes. It is based upon peoples response to a product/topic. This kind of information can be collected through reviews, websites, newspapers, forums or simply through talking to people. The purpose of this method of research is gain an actual understanding of what it is an audience wants and gives you as the researcher actual solid information that you can work with rather than having to assume what it is a target audience likes. The information is more specific as you are getting their opinions rather than just basing your findings off of statistics. What qualitative information does is make the statistics from quantitative a lot clearer
